Why Yakubu, INEC'S Chairman Must Resign- PDP
The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo State has called
for the resignation of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof Mammud Yakubu for his alleged complicity in the party’s loss at the November 26 governorship election in the state.
The party is also demanding the resignation of INEC National
Commissioners over their alleged inability to conduct
free and fair elections in the country.
The party in a communique at the end of its meeting held in
Akure, the state capital however passed a vote of confidence on Governor Olusegun Mimiko and the party leaders in the state.
The party was however kept mute on whether it would challenge at the election petitions tribunal the outcome of the election that produced Mr Oluwarotimi Akeredolu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner of the election.
The communique signed by the Secretary of the party, Chief Oyedele Ibine blamed the party’s loss on the role allegedly played by the electoral umpire before and during the governorship election.
The communique reads: “That INEC stands condemned for its shoddy preparations for the election, particularly the curious removal of our candidate’s name, Eyitayo Jegede, SAN from the list of candidates for the election.
“Therefore we declare that INEC blatantly deviated from the provisions of the Electoral Act, charted a curious and inglorious path deliberately, with a view to fostering on us a preconceived agenda to subvert the process and shut the PDP out of the November 26 election.
“That we condemn the rush of INEC to conduct the election on November 26th, in view of the fact that it constitutionally
still had up to January 2017 to conduct the election.
This attitude did not allow our party to campaign for the
election particularly after we won in the Court of Appeal on
24th November, barely 48 hours to the election, thus INEC by this action reinforced and confirmed our suspicion that it was on a mission to ensure that the PDP lose the election by every means.
