Obasanjo |
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo yesterday gave his support to the clamours by the South- East to produce the next president of the country. Obasanjo said irrespective of the thinking ahead of 2019 general elections, he believes that the Igbo too should have a shot at the Presidency.
The ex- president stated this while receiving the leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Ogun State chapter, at his Hilltop residence in Abeokuta for a special New Year service. Obasanjo’s support for the actualisation of Igbo presidency came barely four days after he and the immediate past president, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, held a closed-door meeting for three hours.
The meeting was held at the Ibogun-Olaogun country home of Obasanjo in Ifo Local Government Area of Ogun State on Friday. Addressing the CAN members led by their chairman, Bishop Tunde Akin Akinsanya, the former president noted that injustice and marginalisation had been a major source of conflict among ethnic and regional divisions in the country.
Apart from giving nod to South-East to secure the Presidency, Obasanjo also expressed support for the Yewa-Awori extraction of Ogun West senatorial district to produce the next governor of the state. He, however, declared that his submissions were his personal view.
Obasanjo explained that his resolve for a just and fair country made him to work for the emergence of a President of South-South extraction in person of Jonathan in 2009. His words: “But, irrespective of the thinking of the people ahead of 2019, I personally think that South-East should have a go at the Presidency too.
“The same is happening here. If Ijebu and Egba have produced the governor (in Ogun State), it is only fair and just to allow the Yewa or Ogun West to also produce governor. Or else, one day, they will also stand up and take up arms against this injustice against them.
