The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said that it has no plan to postpone the November 26 governorship election in Ondo State.
The commission was reacting to the call by 20 out of 30
political parties participating in the elec-tion for a shift in
the poll date.
There was report of protest in Akure, Ondo State
capital on Monday by supporters of the parties, which their leaders said could pose a threat to the election.
But the Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, Mr. Rotimi Oyekanmi, said the commission is not contemplating any shift in the date.
According to him, preparations for the Ondo governorship election started since March this year, adding that 12 out of 14 activities planned for the poll have already been executed.
Oyekanmi noted that there is no ground yet for the postponement in line with the Electoral Act. He disclosed that the commission will hold a stakeholders’ forum today in
Akure, which is the last stage before the election.
