El-Rufai, Shehu Sani Fighting Over 2019 Presidency

El-Rufai and Sani

The face-off between Senator Shehu Sani of Kaduna State and Governor Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna State is reflecting the fight for the soul of  All Progressives Congress, APC, ahead of the 2019 presidential election, inside sources have revealed.

The latest example of how the battle between both men is mirroring the struggle for the soul of the APC was thrown up at the zonal meeting of the North-West council of the APC in Dutse, Jigawa State, last weekend.

The APC zonal executive at that meeting decided to override the indefinite suspension slammed on Senator Sani by the Kaduna State executive of the party.

Present at the meeting presided over by the northwest national vice chairman, Inuwa Abdulkadir, were Governors Umar Ganduje, Kano; Bello Masari, Kano; Aminu Tambuwal, Sokoto; Abubakar Bagudu, Kebbi and the host, Abubakar Badaru, Jigawa.

Governor El-Rufai of Kaduna State was absent.

Informed sources disclosed that the decision to overturn the decision reflected the schism in the APC that has pitched supporters of President Muhammadu Buhari and potential successors in 2019 or 2023. According to sources, Senator Sani is seen as a prop of APC rivals of Governor El-Rufai in the North West, who would like to use him as a distraction to the Kaduna governor’s future political aspirations.

“This is part of a rivalry between El-Rufai and some other APC governors in the Northwest,” an informed source privy to the developments revealed.

El-Rufai and Sani fell out even before the 2015 general elections when El-Rufai, alongside associates of Buhari, supported a retired army general, Mohammed Sani Salleh, for the APC Kaduna Central senatorial ticket of the party.
